How to Measure for a New Door

Measuring for a new door isn't complicated but does require accuracy. When you're ready to replace an interior or exterior door, follow the steps below to make sure you get the right size the first time.

When it's time to replace your door or if you're installing a brand new one, it's important to get the measurements correct so that our knowledgeable staff can direct you to your best options. Here is a step by step guide to help you:

Tools You'll Need:

Steps to Measure:

  1. Measure the Door Width:
    • Measure across the door opening at three points: the top, middle, and bottom.
    • Record the smallest measurement to ensure the new door will fit.
  2. Measure the Door Height:
    • Measure from the floor to the top of the door opening on both the left and right sides.
    • Record the shortest measurement for accuracy.
  3. Measure the Depth (Thickness):
    • Check the thickness of the existing door or the door frame. Standard doors are typically 1 3/8 inches or 1 3/4 inches thick.
  4. Measure the Rough Opening:
    • Remove any trim to expose the rough opening, if possible.
    • Measure the width and height of the rough opening (the space in the framing). Ensure to take measurements from stud to stud and floor to header.
  5. Check for Squareness:
    • Use a level to check if the opening is square. Measure diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. Both diagonal measurements should be equal. If not, adjustments may be needed.
  6. Account for Clearance:
    • Leave a small gap (typically 1/8 inch) on all sides of the door to allow for smooth operation.
  7. Measure for the Door Swing:
    • Determine the door's swing direction (left-hand or right-hand). Stand with your back to the hinges and note which side the door opens toward.
